It is crucial to help your current and future team members feel valued and appreciated, if you want them to stay motivated on your project. For leaders it is crucial that your employees feel valued and appreciated, if you want them to stay in your company and do their best. Happy and motivated employees will lead to happy customers and great Employee Branding.

However, it can be a challenge to communicate appreciation in the right way, since we all have different ways of experiencing and feeling appreciation. Both within the same age generation and across generations.

The fact is, that there are five different languages that can express appreciation. And each language has a number of dialects. If we don’t speak the same language and dialect, then the receiver might not feel appreciated, at least not the way we intended when we put in the effort.

Over time your colleague or employee might even lose their motivation and job satisfaction and change jobs, perhaps without being conscious of the root cause (not feeling appreciated). It might even lead to bad ‘Employee Branding’ in the long run.

Did you know that:

  • Only 51% of all leaders think they are good at communicating appreciation. And only 17% of their employees feel it.
  • 79% of employees that leave their job says that lack of appreciation is the primary reason. (In Denmark we even hold a European record in changing jobs frequently).
  • Top 4 factors for ‘On-the-job-employee-happiness’ are: 1) Appreciation for your work 2) Good relationships with colleagues 3) Good work-life balance 4) Good relationships with superiors
  • There is no correlation between a person’s preferred language of appreciation and their DISC or MBTI profile.

We might not even be conscious of our own preferred language of appreciation, which makes it even harder to know that others prefer. If we do know it, we might even forget during a busy workday. Our default mode is typically to show appreciation in our own preferred language.

In this inspirational speech we will dive into the Five languages of Appreciation developed by Gary Chapman and Dr. Paul White. You will learn more about the MBA test that has been filled out by more than 150.000 people from 60 countries. The book ‘The 5 languages of Appreciation in the Workplace’ has been read by 280.000, and the method is used in companies like Microsoft, NASA, Ford and in Universities like Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford. You can read more here:

In the workshop we will discuss motivation and appreciation of Millennials. Are there any known differences in the use of the 5 languages when it comes to Millennials? How can the 5 languages be used to strengthen the relations across generations in the company? Should appreciation come from above? Or might it just as well come from the colleagues? Which language and which specific actions make you feel motivated and appreciated?

The speaker and workshop facilitator is M.Sc.EE Lise Grevenkop-Castenskiold. After working 20 years with R&D, leadership and coaching she has specialized in what makes people feel more life- and work happiness. In 2015 she became a Certified Facilitator of the Appreciation at Work training process, and this is her favorite topic, since it is a simple hands-on tool that can make a huge difference for a persons life- and work happiness.
