In these times we are all more reliant on our internet connections for remote work and video conferencing, which makes a slow connection even more infuriating than before. But what do we really mean when we say "slow internet"? In this talk we will explore the everyday concept of "slowness", break it down into its components of bandwidth and latency and do a deep dive into the technical reasons for why it occurs. The focus is on home and small business networks, and the goal is that you will walk away from this talk with a deeper understanding of
how your internet connection works, and some pointers to what you can do to improve it!

Toke Høiland-Jørgensen holds a master's degree in computer science and mathematics from Roskilde University, and a PhD in computer science from Karlstad University in Sweden. His PhD research focused on computer networking performance with a particular interest in latency and bufferbloat mitigation in the Linux kernel. Today he works as a Principal Kernel Engineer at Red Hat, working primarily with the Linux networking stack and related
technologies.
