Residual stress has a noticeable impact on fatigue life, dimensional stability, and corrosion resistance of structural components. Negligence of residual stress can reduce the service life of components and increase cost of repairs and restoration. Thus, residual stress analysis, measurement, and management is of high importance in design, testing and application phases.
The webinar will briefly introduce the main sources of residual stresses, why they matter, and how they are related with some failure mechanisms. The available techniques to characterize residual stresses will be mentioned, and four of those techniques - lab X-ray, neutron, synchrotron, and electron microscopy - will be discussed in some details. Furthermore, the webinar will explore the relation of residual stresses, microstructure, and some failure mechanisms.
