Our first event takes a deep-dive into the Czech case, where the Temelín nuclear power plant (NPP) has been retrofit to provide district heating to Czech consumers and industry in České Budějovice, a city with about 100,000 inhabitants. Temelin is the largest electricity producer in Czechia, covering roughly one fifth of domestic consumption. The heating utility Teplárna České Budějovice supplies heat to 30,000 homes and over 400 companies, institutions, schools, medical facilities and shops.
Program and speakers:
- Techno-economics of nuclear heat integration: Martin Krýcha from ČEZ, the Czech national utility will present the techno-economic case for establishing a hot water conduit from the Temelín NPP to the district heating network of České Budějovice.
- The district heating operator perspective: Teplárna České Budějovice, the district heating utility of the city, will provide their account of integrating the conduit into their existing network, i.e. the operational and commercial realities from the receiving end.
- The national policy and industry perspective: Teplárenské sdružení České republiky, the Czech District Heating Union, will speak to the broader national picture, including efforts at the Dukovany NPP and the potential role of future nuclear capacity, both small modular reactors and large new-build units.
After three short keynotes of circa 15 minutes each, we open the floor for questions and debate for 30-45 minutes. The webinar will be moderated by Lubomir Bures from IDA Nuclear and Kathrine Stannov from IDA Energi.
The next event in the series will be reflections from Danish energy planners on what we can learn from the Czech case. Speakers are being lined up as we speak!
