“Don’t let emotions get the best of you, but let emotions get the best OUT of you!”
- Coach Mike Krzyzewski

Emotions are not noise to be suppressed. They are data and signals that can help you understand yourself, communicate better, and make more intentional decisions.

You were hired for your technical knowledge. But many of the moments that shape your career are not purely technical: a design review that becomes heated, defending a decision to a sceptical senior colleague, saying the wrong thing in a stand-up, or dealing with the internal spiral after making a mistake.

These situations are emotional challenges — and learning to handle them well is a key skill for effective engineers and technical leaders.

About the workshop

This hands-on workshop will help you recognise what you are feeling before it drives your behaviour, create a deliberate pause between a trigger and your reaction, stay grounded when situations are ambiguous or stressful, and influence technical decisions even when you do not have formal authority.

Through practical exercises and reflection, you will develop tools to manage pressure, communicate more effectively, and build stronger professional relationships.

What we will work on

Emotional literacy — knowing what you feel
Learn to identify emotions with greater precision and understand them as useful signals rather than obstacles.

Emotional regulation — responding instead of reacting
Build the ability to pause between a trigger and your behaviour, giving yourself the choice to respond intentionally.

Affect tolerance — staying present with difficulty
Practise staying calm and constructive when facing ambiguity, frustration, uncertainty, or situations without clear answers.

Empathy and social skills
Develop listening skills that build trust, give feedback that is more likely to be received, and influence others without relying on authority.

Self-compassion — sustaining performance
Replace unhelpful self-criticism with an inner dialogue that supports learning, resilience, and long-term performance.

What to expect

This is an interactive workshop. You will be encouraged to talk, practise, reflect, and experiment with new approaches rather than simply listen.

You will leave with a practical toolkit that you can apply immediately in your everyday work.

After the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Recognise and describe your emotions with more precision than simply “fine” or “stressed”
  • Use emotions as information to guide better decisions
  • Respond more effectively in high-pressure situations such as reviews, disagreements, and incidents
  • Stay grounded when problems are ambiguous or conversations become challenging
  • Replace harsh self-criticism with a mindset that supports sustainable performance

No previous experience with emotional intelligence work is required - only curiosity and a willingness to engage.

Practical: There will be a sandwich and soda for you to enjoy. The workshop is held in English.
