Status of the development of green ferries

More and more ferries on short routes in Denmark will in the coming years become “green ferries” At this event, especially the huge topic of transfer of electricity from shore power connections to the ferries will be highlighted.

The Danish Government’s target to be carbon neutral by 2050 and the new climate law to cut emissions 70% by 2030, has put pressure on the blue Denmark to start transitioning to greener ferry operations and to embark on a journey towards zero emission ferry.  

Hear some of the latest news from Danish ship designers about the transition towards a more green ferry operation, including green energy efficiency initiatives already implemented to ongoing research and innovation projects. The presentations will share thoughts on how to reach this zero emission goal.

17:05 - 17:35 Presentation by Kim Nørby Christensen, Knud E. Hansen
• Design of an efficient ferry for a remote island in a Canadian sound
• Limited fuel supply at remote location
• Fitting in the most efficient drive train
• Environmental impact to design constraints
17.35 - 18.05 Presentation by Preben Thuren Larsen from Hauschildt Marine
• Presentation of “GreenHopper” which is the name on the small ferry which will connect Aalborg and Nørresundby. The GreenHopper will be the first autonomous driven, emission free passenger ferry in Denmark.  
• Brief presentation of a new ferry for Læsø, including description of needs, challenges and green fuel possibilities.
18:05 - 18:30 Refreshments 

18:30 - 19:00 The Case of P&O and a little bit on LightShip by Kristian Lind, OSK Shiptech A/S
• Case story of the coming new P&O ferries to ply the Channel - Worlds larges double ended ferries.
• Weight - The mother of all savings. 
• New trends and opportunities.

19:00 - 19:30 Presentation by Jesper Aagesen, Director and Head of Sustainable Fleet Projects, DFDS A/S
• Brief presentation of DFDS’ latest Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax newbuildings.
• Presentation of DFDS’ Climate Action Plan.
• The path, options, collaboration and challenges towards reaching the goals both from a short-term and long-term perspective.

19.30 - 20.00 Wrapping up and goodbuy

The event is in collaboration with Danish Society for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Foundation.
