Tiny Tapeout: Getting started - Design your own chip

Ever dreamed of designing your own chip? With Tiny Tapeout you go from idea to real silicon — no experience required. Workshop 1 of 2: we get you set up and ready to submit to the autumn shuttle.

Introduction to Tiny Tapeout with hands-on TT06 demoboards — from simple logic to a Linux-booting RISC-V — and your first step toward your own ASIC.

Tiny Tapeout lets anyone design and manufacture their own ASIC at a fraction of the traditional cost. This is the first of two workshops that together take you from beginner to a submission-ready design before the Tiny Tapeout shuttle closes in early September.

We cover: - What is Tiny Tapeout, and why is it a game-changer for hardware enthusiasts? - Overview of the design flow: from Wokwi / HDL to finished chip - The shuttle model: how many designs share one chip, and what it costs - Setting up the development environment — so everyone is ready for the hands-on workshop 2

Hands-on with real silicon — we bring 10 Tiny Tapeout demoboards carrying TT06 silicon, so participants can try designs on actual chips. We explore a range of designs to get a feel for what the platform can do, from the simple to the surprisingly capable: - Simple stateless logic (the “hello world” of chip design) - Analog building blocks — an ADC and ring oscillators - All the way up to a full RISC-V core that boots Linux

By the end you have the basic understanding needed to start your own first chip design — one that can be taped out on an upcoming shuttle (we target TTSKY26c, closing 7 Sep 2026).

Target group Hardware- and software-curious people, students and hobbyists interested in chip design. No prior experience required.

You will get an understanding of the Tiny Tapeout ecosystem and a working development environment, ready to start work on your own design.

Prerequisites None. Bring a laptop.

There will be food served during the evening.

The workshop is conducted by Jørgen Kragh Jakobsen. Jørgen has been part of the open-source chip design ecosystem for the last 5 years, has done multiple workshops on Tiny Tapeout, and has given guest lectures and camps covering all aspects of doing chip design with open-source tools and PDKs.
