We are finally tackling the most requested topic in post-event evaluations and setting out to explore Austria through the wineglass. Their wonderfully gastronomic and reliably quaffable wines are ever more visible on restaurant wine lists and moving from the status of ‘best kept secrets’ towards ‘modern classics’.
Austria is one of the most quality-focused winemaking countries in the world - but it’s also subject to all manner of misconceptions:
- Is it a beer country that also makes some wine? No, it’s very much a wine country.
- Then Riesling must be planted everywhere? Not really, it’s almost an afterthought.
- Austria must have gotten into wine recently, then! No, wine has been a mainstay of the Austrian countryside since antiquity. And vineyards have actually shrunk in the recent decades.
- The steep Alpine vineyards must be beautiful! Except almost all of the vineyards are on the rolling hills and flatlands of Eastern Austria rather than in the Alps.
- Didn’t they put antifreeze in their wine? The 1985 scandal is very much in the past, but it led to some of the most stringent regulations and enforcement in the world.
We will taste a range of wines from across Austria, exploring key grape varieties and wine styles that have taken the world by storm. We will also look at how to read Austrian wine labels and learn to understand regional and quality classifications, enabling you to predict what a wine will taste on the basis of what’s written on the bottle. There will also be an additional focus on the environment and sustainability, as we will examine cutting-edge initiatives to adapt to climate change and make viticulture in Austria ever more environmentally friendly.
This tasting will be presented in English by Domen Prešern DipWSET of Roots Vin (domen@rootsvin.dk).
This tasting is open for everyone, but as we sometimes will be very detailed, it does give a better experience, if you have some basic knowledge of wines. A good help is to study this “cheat-sheet” kortlink.dk/2pdep and kortlink.dk/2pdfs, to get a basic understanding of wines, their appearance, aromas, flavours and structure.
It is possible to order a quick snack meal served at 18:10. Options will be sent.
The presentation will be in English
