In 2015 Bangladesh reached the status of becoming a middle-income country. Bangladesh is known for a very rapid growth over the last 20 years where multinational companies are producing ever increasing quantities of garments for export. Around 4 million workers are working in the Ready-Made Garments industry, with around 60% being women.

At the same time the media coverage of Bangladesh in Denmark has mainly been of specific events such as the fire in factories at the Rana Plaza where more than 1100 died and 2400 workers were injured. Poor conditions for the workers and child labour are also frequently reported.

A more comprehensive of the textile/fashion industry is not reported by most media, therefore the public in Denmark has been left with an impression of the country being a “bottom-less basket”.

In the meeting we will look at the fashion industry from different angles where the following questions will be analysed

1)      The economic importance of the fashion industry for Bangladesh and its role in the development towards becoming a middle-income country.

2)      What are the implications of this for the status and role of women and children in Bangladesh. How does it impact the communities?

3)      How has the workers conditions in the fashion industry changed? What are the trends and the role of trade unions.

4)      How is this seen from the perspective of the fashion Industry
