The maritime sector in Denmark has an important role to play in the sustainability debate. The global maritime regulations developed at IMO are undergoing changes. Expectations among cargo owners and in shipping companies are high. Manufacturers adapt and have to provide new solutions. This meeting will provide views on the SDG´s from different angles of the maritime industry.

Addressing the climate challenge through the SDGs. The consequences of climate change are being felt globally and all actors across the board must assist in addressing the challenges. Through the Maritime SDG Accelerator, the UNDP and Danish Maritime worked strategically with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and helped maritime companies expedite new solutions and business models, by Stine Kirstein Junge, Global Head of SDG Accelerator for SMEs and Private Sector Advisor UNDP Nordic Representation Office

Shipping en route to Paris Agreement overshoot. The presentation will show a growth forecast for international shipping, leading to a corresponding increase in energy demand for the maritime sector MAN Energy Solutions' expected future fuel mix will be shown along with the expected well-to-wake CO2 emissions from those fuels. The presentation concludes that shipping is en route to a Paris Agreement overshoot, i.e. the longer no international CO2 regulation is not passed, the more unlikely it is that the annual overshoot can be caught up. Finally, possible solutions to catching up the overshoot are discussed, by Dr. Anders Kryger Principal Strategist MAN Energy Solutions

18:05 - 18:35 BREAK

Pathways Towards Achieving Zero GHG Emissions in 2050. The presentation will provide a summary of GHG-related developments at IMO and the conditions required to achieve a target of zero GHG emissions by 2050. This is feasible for the maritime sector, but it necessitates the production and uptake of low(er) carbon fuels, operational and energy efficiency measures, emission reduction technologies (to address e.g. methane slip), in combination with regulatory drivers and other incentive schemes, by Dr. Jan Otto de Kat Regulatory Affairs Manager Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping

Practical initiatives taken – A shipping company view. Challenges in relation to the use of indicators AER and CII and how shipowners may respond.
