France is unquestionably the most significant country of the wine world. Many regions have made a name for themselves over the decades and centuries with some - Bourgogne, Bordeaux and Champagne - making many of the world's most desirable and expensive wines. Indeed, much of the ink is spilled about just a handful of producers. But France is more than just the most written-about producers in a few wine regions. It's a complex mosaic of hundreds of appellations (AOC) across the whole country, each specialising in a small-ish number of grapes and a specified set of wine styles.

As the top wines have become too expensive for most to afford, formerly minor sub-regions like the Mâcon in Burgundy and Côtes Castillon in Bordeaux have improved by leaps and bounds. Provence is more than just rosé. White wines of the Rhône can be exceptionally exciting, if not as widely produced as the reds. Cahors and other wines from the South-West, long kept down by the protectionism of Bordeaux limiting their access to market are blossoming. Alsace, Beaujolais and the patchwork of regions along the Loire that were long known for simple bistro wines are now making their mark with complex and exciting wines. Even the poster-region for the European wine lake of old, Languedoc-Roussillon, has thoroughly reformed.

We will taste 8 wines from all over France, including wines from some of the most exciting regions and downright iconic producers. Through the tasting we will also identify a number of other good value appellations worth looking out for, identify top trends changing the landscape of French wine (for the better) and look at what regulatory changes are improving the future of French winemaking.

This tasting will be presented in English by Denmark’s blind wine tasting champion, Domen Prešern DipWSET of Roots Vin (domen@rootsvin.dk).

This tasting is open for everyone, but as we sometimes will be very detailed, it does give a better experience, if you have some basic knowledge of wines. A good help is to study this “cheat-sheet” kortlink.dk/2pdep and kortlink.dk/2pdfs, to get a basic understanding of wines, their appearance, aromas, flavours and structure.

It is possible to order a quick snack meal served at 18:10. Options will be sent.

The presentation will be in English
