Complex data spanning several years? Let Pandas handle it
Do you struggle with data points?
Meet Maja: a researcher working on a long-term experiment to understand how a particular plant species reacts to changes in temperature over time. Maja has been collecting data for the past five years, during which she has measured plant growth under different temperature conditions.
The resulting data is vast, complex and comes from various sources. This makes it difficult for her to get a clear picture of the results.
When working with experimental data, it is rare for the data to be neatly structured and ready for analysis. Often, it is vast, unwieldy and, as in this example, comes from multiple sources. This means you have to spend a considerable amount of time cleaning, transforming and preparing the data before the analysis can even begin. This process can be both time-consuming and frustrating, especially when working with datasets containing thousands or millions of data points.
This is where Pandas comes into the picture.
How can Pandas help?
Pandas is a Python library that makes it easy to work with large datasets. It offers data structures such as DataFrame, which organise data into tables so that you can easily import, clean, transform and perform operations on them.
1. Reading and loading data:
You can use Pandas to read data from various sources – such as CSV files, Excel or SQL databases. Pandas allows you to load your data into a DataFrame, which provides you with a structured format to work with.
2. Filtering and transforming data
When working with large datasets, filtering is necessary to remove irrelevant information. Maja uses Pandas, amongst other tools, to filter her data and remove incomplete or irrelevant measurements.
3. Handling missing data
When working with experimental data, missing values are often a challenge. With Pandas, you can handle these values, for example by replacing them with the average of the existing measurements.
4. Data visualisation
Once your data has been cleaned and transformed, it is time to visualise it to highlight any patterns. Matplotlib, which can be used alongside Pandas, enables you to create various types of visualisations that help you understand your data and communicate your results.
