The key to thriving in Danish workplaces

Danish work culture is built on trust, autonomy - and initiative. Managers expect you to speak up, act, and learn from mistakes. For internationals, understanding this “hidden contract” is key to thriving at work.

In Denmark, freedom at work comes with responsibility. Employees are expected to organize their own tasks, make suggestions, and speak up when something doesn’t work.

As consultant Mikkel Hougaard Orlovski puts it: “In Denmark, everything starts and ends with personal initiative.”

What does that mean in practice?

Danish managers rarely hand out step-by-step instructions. Instead, they’ll ask: “What do you think?” The idea is to show trust in your abilities and to encourage growth.

For internationals, this can feel confusing. In other work cultures, such a question might signal lack of competence – or even be seen as a hidden test. In Denmark, it’s simply the normal way of working.

Why mistakes are allowed

Initiative in Denmark also means you’re allowed to fail. Trying something and adjusting along the way is often valued more than waiting for the “perfect” solution. Managers assume you will learn and improve through action.

How to show initiative without fear

  • Make a suggestion, not just a question. Instead of asking: “What should I do?”, try: “I was thinking of doing X – what do you think?”
  • Speak up early. Don’t wait until an idea is polished – colleagues expect to see work-in-progress.
  • Balance priorities proactively. If you receive tasks from both a manager and a project leader, raise the issue yourself: “I have 20 hours – should I spend them on A or B?”.

The bottom line

Thriving in Denmark means embracing autonomy – and matching it with initiative. You don’t need to be afraid of failing, but you do need to act.

That’s the hidden contract in Danish workplaces: initiative earns trust.
