Denmark has a strong foundation for the use of geothermal energy due to favorable geological conditions and well-developed district heating infrastructures. Nevertheless, geothermal heat has so far played only a limited role in the Danish energy system, though it seems ideal for phasing out unsustainable energy sources.

This webinar will provide an overview of geothermal energy for district heating in Denmark, including the geological resources, existing and planned developments, and the factors that have promoted or constrained wider deployment.

GEUS research supporting the development of geothermal projects will be presented. Attention will be given to the GO-Forward project, which develops process-based modelling approaches for predicting reservoir architecture, porosity and permeability before drilling, with the aim of reducing geological uncertainty and exploration risk. The webinar will also briefly touch upon operational challenges related to geothermal energy production, including scaling, corrosion and clogging. 

Together, the presentations will show how geological knowledge, subsurface characterization and predictive modelling can contribute to the assessment and development of geothermal energy in Denmark and other sedimentary basins.

About the Speaker(s) or Company

Henrik Vosgerau is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Geophysics and Sedimentary Basins at GEUS. He is a sedimentologist with extensive experience in the characterisation and mapping of Danish subsurface sandstone reservoirs for geothermal energy and geological CO₂ storage.

Mette Olivarius is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Geoenergy and Storage at GEUS. Her research focuses on mineralogical composition, diagenetic development and reservoir properties of sedimentary rocks, to make process-based pre-drill predictions of geothermal reservoir quality.

The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is an independent research and advisory institution under the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities. GEUS conducts geological mapping, research, data management and advisory work related to the sustainable use and protection of the subsurface in Denmark and Greenland. GEUS has extensive experience in assessing geothermal resources, characterising sedimentary reservoirs and investigating the geological and geochemical processes that influence the development and long-term performance of geothermal systems. GEUS also manages national geological and geophysical datasets and provides maps, models and research-based advice to public authorities and industry.
