From Resource to Reality – Drilling Europe’s Geothermal Growth

Europe has significant geothermal resources and growing demand for reliable, low-carbon heat, but translating this potential into large-scale deployment requires more than identifying suitable resources.

This webinar will examine the factors determining the pace of geothermal development across Europe, including market demand, regulation and policy, drilling and supply-chain capacity, project costs and subsurface risk.

Alexandra Gerken will provide an overview of geothermal market developments across key European countries, including the policies supporting growth and the barriers that continue to constrain deployment.

The presentation will also examine the competitiveness of geothermal heating compared with alternative district-heating technologies and explore emerging technologies, drilling practices and innovations that could influence the economics and scalability of future geothermal development.

Alexandra Gerken is Vice President in Rystad Energy’s Renewables & Power team, where she leads the company’s geothermal research.

Her work focuses on geothermal economics, market development and the wider energy transition, combining asset-level modelling with analysis of policy, power markets and competing technologies to identify where geothermal can deliver attractive economics, resilient low-carbon heat and strategic value for investors, developers and policymakers.
